Seshime urushi (Ki urushi) Raw lacquer
The Japanese Seshime urushi (raw lacquer) is used among others for the manufacture of adhesives and fillers. In the Japanese lacquer technique, he also serves as a primer with various additives.
Note:
Earlier, Seshime urushi (branch lacquer) was obtained from the thin branches of the lacquer tree. Today, Seshime urushi varnishes from various import raw lacquers and is therefore only a trademark for Ki urushi (raw lacquer).
Roiro urushi (black lacquer)
is used in the Japanese lacquer technique for surface coating and as a basis for scattering of silver.
Shuai urushi (transparent lacquer)
Transparent lacquer (Shuai urushi) is mixed 1: 1 with colored uruschie (here red lacquer)
Aka urushi also called Shu urushi (red lacquer) (only in set 1)
is used in the Japanese lacquer technique for surface coating and as a basis for scattering of gold powder.
Iron oxide, red - (Bengara) (only in set 2) with transparent varnish (translucent varnish) - (Syuai urushi)
for making Bengara urushi
Mixing ratios:
For lines: 50% translucent varnish (Syuai urushi) and 50% iron oxide red (bengara)
For surfaces: 60% translucent varnish Syuai urushi) and 40% iron oxide red (bengara)
Thoroughly mix with wooden spatula!
Advice on health and labor protection
- The liquid Japanese lacquer can cause skin allergic reactions, so avoid skin contact with urushi. In rare cases, allergic reactions may also be caused by contact with the urushi vapors.
- While handling Urushi you should definitely wear latex or nitrile gloves! Discard contaminated clothing immediately.
- After skin contact with Urushi, immediately wipe the affected skin with rapeseed oil and cellulose.
- After eye contact with Urushi, thoroughly rinse eyes with water and seek medical attention.
- Clean the work surface with organic solvents such as alcohol or acetone.
- The workspace should be well ventilated.
- Brushes are cleaned with rapeseed oil. Other tools are placed in the humidor as urushi cures in this environment.
Camphor turpentine - Japanese camphor oil Hen'noyu
for dilution of urushi
Animal glue (Japanese Nikawa)
For Nikawa urushi
Charcoal
is used as an abrasive to smooth paint surfaces and gluing seams.
Despite careful handling, occasional breakage or small spalling is not completely ruled out in this natural product. We point out that this is not a reason for complaint.
Clay powder (Tonoko)
used for the production of filler and supplementary materials. Sehime urushi (Rohlack) is used as a binder. As Tonoko are called in Japan several fine mineral powders such as whetstone powder or brick dust.
There are about six different varieties Tonoko. Our Tonoko match the quality of KOREST Modellton (Model clay).
Jinoko - fine (approx. 10 µm)
for the production of filling and putty compounds, such as ji with rice mush and ki urushi.
Powder gold
Gold 23,75 karat
Japanese cypress spatula - Hera
for the production of Nikawa urushi or fillers with Urushi as a binder.
Pointed Brushes - Fude
1 of each size - sice 2 and 1c - with wooden handle.
How to clean the brush:
before you use the brush for the first time the hairs of the brush has to be cleaned with warm water and they have to dry in the open air - for Urushi please use only brushes which are completly dry!
After having used the brush we recommend to clean it completly with rape oil and finally to press out the oil, in which you should bend the brush back into shape.
Advice:
The traditionell Fude were made in Japan out of armpit hair of the japanese rat, which are replaced with hair of cats today. Because of the european prohibition to import produtcs which are made out of hide of cats, we are not able to offer the original Fude. But with our japanese workmates we found a suitable replacement, these brushes are made out of the hair from the Red Sable in natural quill, because brushes with metallic screw are unsuitable for use with Urushi.
Ashirai kebo
Brush for sprinkling gold or silver powder. Use for each metal an extra brush.
Glutinous rice / rice flour
for the preparation of adhesive urushi
